Why Guaifenesin for Fibromyalgia?

"Many other treatments can help the symptoms of fibromyalgia, but they are merely 'Band-Aids'. The Guaifenesin treatment is the only known treatment that actually reverses the disease."

Dr. St. Amand and his assistant, Claudia Marek, developed the guaifenesin treatment regimen for fibromyalgia.  Dr. St. Amand, who has been on the teaching staff at the Los Angeles Harbor/UCLA Hospital, Department of Endocrinology for over forty years as an assistant clinical professor, stumbled upon the guaifenesin treatment, quite by accident, while he was treating a patient for gout back in 1959.  In his book, What Doctors May Not Tell You about Fibromyalgia, Dr. St. Amand explains in interesting detail how his discovery was made.

Dr. St. Amand’s theory postulates that dysenergism on a cellular level is the root cause of fibromyalgia.  His theory posits that this lack of energy is the result of the body's retention of a biochemical substance (phosphates) caused by a metabolic malfunction. Dr. St. Amand's theory is unaccepted by the majority of the medical community, and the use of guaifenesin to treat this metabolic disorder hasn't been embraced either. This rejection is due to the fact that there is no scientific evidence to prove Dr. St. Amand’s theory which relies on anecdotal evidence obtained by him through his 40 year practice, working with hundreds of patients with fibromyalgia symptoms.

Dr. St. Amand and Claudia “have seen symptoms eliminated and normal living restored in an astonishing 90 percent of the fibromyalgia sufferers they properly treated with guaifenesin” (from: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Fibromyalgia).  The guaifenesin protocol has successfully reversed fibromyalgia in sufferers all over the world.  The numbers keep rising and the list of doctors using this treatment continues to grow.

Although reams of anecdotal evidence exist on the success of guaifenesin in treating fibromyalgia, tightly controlled and credible research is required before the medical community will embrace Dr. St. Amand’s theory.  Clinical Studies: Immunological and Genetic Analysis of Auto inflammatory Genes in Fibromyalgia Immunological and Genetic Analysis of Auto inflammatory Genes in Fibromyalgia, are now being done at City of Hope, a research institution in California. You can read about this in detail at   http://clinicaltrials.coh.org/study_display.aspx?pid=3715518.  One of the studies will be looking at all the genes Dr. St. Amand has selected: the sodium-phosphate transporter genes in the kidney, the ANK gene, etc. Secondly, another study will be studying the use of guaifenesin and its effect on the cells.

Fibromyalgia is an insidious disease that slowly consumes our health and silently worsens as the years go by.  The guaifenesin treatment does NOT cure fibromyalgia, rather it reverses the disease.  Your age, health issues and other aspects will determine how long it will take you to reverse to a better time in your life and then to a place of no fibromyalgia.

This treatment is not easy.  The struggle to regain our vitality, for many of us, proves to be as harsh as the disease itself, if not worse, and many times seems like a burden nearly too heavy to bear.  But what are our options?  Going through a few years of pain and suffering with the protocol or going through ALL our life with pain and suffering that will only worsen.

I don’t have the words to express my gratitude to Dr. St. Amand and Claudia for all their hard work and perseverance to get the word out, in spite of much criticism over his theory.  I can now once again enjoy life, thanks to them!
