Carleen

4 years on guaifenesinHello, I’m a 54 yr. old female and I have had FMS for at least 15years. In 1999 my body collapsed, and I was bedridden.   In 2000, my daughter, and her soon to be husband were setting around the dinner table having a family discussion. My son-in-law had bought Dr. Amand's book "What your Doctor May Not Tell You about Fibromyalgia" and said he reads it when he goes to the Laundromat. That is when the discussion began about me starting the Guaifenesin Protocol. Both my daughter (Lisa) and son-in-law (Brian) felt that it was a no-brainer to start guaifenesin.

Brian left the book here for me to read. My mind was already made up, and I was not going to start the protocol. The information in Dr. Amand's book changed my mind.... slowly. So in March of 2001 I started the guaifenesin protocol.  I’ve been on the protocol for four years now. The improvements I have made are startling, but it is a life-long commitment, since there is no cure for FMS. I am now able to walk around several blocks on good days. I only need to use my wheel chair if it is a bad day or I need to walk long distances. I was housebound, and now I am able to go out, work on my garden, go to the store, etc. I still need the use of a cane, and one of those motorized scooters in big stores.

When I started seeing improvement, it was slow and for only some good hours in a day. I actually have good days now, but they need to be put in perspective. I can have a bad headache, and still have a good day, but migraine headaches are much less now in intensity, and length of time.

I encourage everyone to do research on the guaifenesin protocol, talk to your family, and doctor. You need to have a good mind set when you start taking guaifenesin.  Another thing to remember is that when you are having a rough "cycle" the medicine is working, and you just need to let guaifenesin help your body. Dr. Amand states "this protocol is not for the faint of heart," and he is right.

If you don't learn very much from this short story try to remember that I was bed fast, had to have help eating, had to use a portable potty, and could hardly even listen to the radio, or TV, etc. Right now I am ready to take a walk, using my cane, and walking slowly, but "Hey I will be outside," which is a blessing.

Oh, one more thing, when my neighbors first noticed that I had started taking walks, they would actually cheer for me, honk their horn, whistle, etc., because it made them feel so good to see my improvements.  Take Good Care Of You.  You can contact me via: shidlergos@aol.com

4 years on guifenesin...Yesterday was my 4th guai birthday.  Four years ago, I had no life.  I had severe headaches and FM.  If I scratched my nose, my arm would flop back to my lap like a rag doll. Showering in the morning took everything out of me. After the shower, I would lay on the couch all day in a zombie type state. Disability at age 45 was not in my plans!

Then I found Claudia, Dr. St. Amand!

Fast forward to today.  I've been back working as an RN in an acute care hospital four days/week for the past 1 1/2 years.  It still seems like I'm always tired and achy but I can ignore it most of the time. I have a life now.  As an RN, I can tell you that Dr. St. Amand's theories make complete medical sense to me.

I'm also a Guaigroup Leader in my Canadian city.  As a leader I just heard someone say to me that she was not going on the protocol because there "has to be something better out there".  She is looking for something simple... an instant cure...  How many instant cures are there for all the genetic diseases out there?  Getting better means lots of work on your part. Think of the diseases out there and the work the patient has to do to stay alive. Treatments are not easy. This also is not an easy treatment but it does get easier along the way. Progress can sometimes be slow but it's still progress!
